Kohtla-Jarve is located on the north-eastern Estonia, near to highway Tallinn – Narva – Petersburg and railway Tallinn-Narva.
The town Kohtla-Jarve founded because of oil shale which deposits in this area are quite considerable. Here live representatives of almost four dozen nationalities, almost four-fifths of them - Russian and Russian-speaking people. Town planning is very peculiar as it consist from six parts that once were independent settlements.
