People used to come to Latvia for beauty and health. Pristine nature, clean air and quality experts made Yurmala and Riga common nouns in this area.
Development of Latvia as a destination for recreation and treatment began in the 19th century. After the Napoleonic War Russian Army’s officers came here for rehabilitation. In 1870 the first sanatorium Marienbad (the so called “bath institution”) opened in Yurmala.
In recent years spa-salons and spa-hotels network has been rapidly developing. Attentive and skilled personnel, usage of natural products, modern equipment and affordable prices make Latvia an attractive spa-destination.
Medical tourism is another rapidly developing area of service. Latvian clinics are equipped with modern equipment and can offer high-level medical services at much lower prices than average European, like aesthetic medicine, dentistry, plastic surgery and many others.
