Riga castle was founded in 1330 after the old castle (Konventa Seta) was destroyed. In 1642 A new wing was built on the Daugava side.

In the times of czarist Russia the castle was rebuilt for the needs of province and the general governer's needs. In 1938 the interior of the castle was redesigned for the needs of latvian government.

The castle is now the residence of the president of Latvia. The flag of the Republic of Latvia always streams above it and on days when the president os in the country the president's flag is nex to it. In addition, there are a number of museums in the castle: the Museum of Foreign Art, History of Latvia, theatre and music.
