In 1874 Russian earl Orlov-Davydov bought a plot of land and built some sort of medieval castle, which was quite fancy at those times.
He named the park, which was adjacent to the caste, Marienberg after his wife and daughter, who both shared the name of Maria. In Estonian it sounds like Maaryamyagi, and the museum bears this name now. In 1975 Maaryamyagi’s Castle was given to Estonian Historical Museum, which covers the period from the beginning of 19th century.
