The Gediminas Tower is the symbol of the city. It is built on the Tower Hill, and is the oldest of Vilnius castles that are mentioned in the chronicles.

The tower is all that remains from the once mighty fortifications of the Upper Castle. The first wooden castle was erected in the beginning of the 13 century. After Vilnius being declared the capital of Lithuania, the caste was fortified by brick walls. The present-day stone castle was built be the order of Vytautas the Grand Duke of Lithuania. Nowadays, the tower serves as the museum dedicated to the history of the city, with an observing platform on the roof of the tower. From there you can see the beautiful and unforgettable view of the Old City and the valley of Neris river.
