Latvia is one of the worlds countries where pristine nature still occupies most of their territory. It is quite telling that Latvias territory is one and a half times larger than the Netherlands but population of the Netherlands is over 16 million people and Latvias is only 2.5 million. And almost half of the total population is concentrated in Riga and its outskirts. Low density of population, absence of hazardous industries and protective approach to nature make Latvia a very attractive environmental tourism destination.
Environmental tourism includes hiking in national parks, watching wild birds and animals. In many forests there are special camping sites near lakes and rivers. Rafting and canoeing on Gauja River is especially popular. Fishing is one of main national sports here. A lot of people also come here for hunting.
There are many parks for outdoor activities in Latvia. They offer obstacle courses and various sorts of extreme entertainment. Bicycle lanes and routes are laid all over Latvia. In some places you can rent a bike in one city and return it in another one. Karting, paintball, diving, pleasure air-plane flights, hot air balloon rides, parachute-jumping and other outdoor and extreme activities are widely available in Latvia. Latvia is a good place to try something extreme because here this kind of activities is inexpensive and accessible in common sense of the word - when it is easy to get there, to find the place, there is no need to queue for a long time and you are always welcome.
For golf fans there are several modern golf courses in Riga and its surroundings.
