Kurzeme (Kurland) is a historical area in the western part of Latvia known as the Old Kursa.
Tukums is a small town set in gardens and orchards at the boundary of Kurzeme. The point of interest in town is the Pils (Castle) Tower, which is the only remaining part of the Livonian order castle constructed in Tukums in 1730. Over the last two centuries the tower has served as a stable, a warehouse, and even a prison. From 1995 onwards it has been home for the town’s history museum. Tukums abounds with old castles and mansions.
Talsi – just like the ancient Rome Talsi lies on 7 hills. Until 1917 the official name of the town was Talsen. A picturesque dendrological park landscaped in 1884 with its marvelous lake of Vilkmuizhas is one of the town’s famous sights. The legend says that those who swim in the lake at noon will be carried underwater by wolves (vilks means a wolf in Latvian) living in the lake.
Saldus is a town at the heart of Kurzeme. It was first mentioned in the historical sources as Saldene in 1253 in the so-called “Agreement of Kurshy” pursuant to which the land of Saldene – the land between Skrunda and Zemgale (terra inter Scrunden un Zemgale) passed to the Livonian order. If you are in the mood for some romantic adventure you should visit Lake Ciecere. A mystical spirit haunts the little island in the centre of the lake.
